Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day]) is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May. From 1868 to 1970, it was observed on May 30.

Some say, "National Straw Hat Day is best celebrated by going out and getting yourself a new straw hat!". But, I think that I already about as many as one man can use. These are just a small sample from my collection.

No Socks Day

Set the Feet Free

According to the inter-web, Ruth and Thomas Roy created No Socks Day to set the feet free and bring them into contact with the earth for one day.  Presumably, it is observed worldwide on May 8 of every year. But, this is the first that I have heard of it.

Only One Day?

I do not dislike socks, but I do avoid wearing them unless I leave the house. And, not always even then - I can not recall ever wearing them with sandals. (I consider "slides", worn before and after donning one's cleats for a game,  as falling into a category of their own.) As seen above, some people may have an even stronger opinion about the subject.

Save the Date

By the way,  National Go Barefoot Day is coming up on June 1st.

May Day

International Workers’ Day

May Day, also called Workers’ Day or International Workers’ Day, day commemorating the historic struggles and gains made by workers and the labour movement, observed in many countries on May 1. In the United States and Canada a similar observance, known as Labor Day, occurs on the first Monday of September.

Marxist theorist Rosa Luxemburg wrote in 1894, "As long as the struggle of the workers against the bourgeoisie and the ruling class continues, as long as all demands are not met, May Day will be the yearly expression of these demands. And, when better days dawn, when the working class of the world has won its deliverance then too humanity will probably celebrate May Day in honor of the bitter struggles and the many sufferings of the past."

Sadly, the struggle continues for too many.
