National Blueberry Pie Day

A good day for pie:

Thanksgiving Aftermath

 Whoa Nellie!

The Thanksgiving holiday, observed last Thursday here in the USA, can exact a toll:

Between the Thanksgiving Day meal itself, and making use of any leftovers, many people have trouble following their regular food regimes.  And, at least one of us apparently paid the price. [Those are my feet in the above photo.]

I have a particular fondness for the rolls or biscuits severed with dinner. My late wife used to make a batch just for me. Those that I don't polish off then are used to make sandwiches with the leftover turkey. On this occasion, I went with avocado - I actually prefer jellied cranberry sauce from a can.  That may sound odd to you, but I have been doing that for years and have made some converts to the cause.

Pumpkin pie is also a favorite. I bet that I will not get many arguments with that.

Apple pie, of course, is nothing to sneeze at. This serving was presented with a topping of Dulce de Leche ice cream.

I hope that, if Thanksgiving Day is a holiday on your calendar, it was good one.

Another Special Day

 National Avocado Day

July 31 is the day to celebrate avocados! Not that I don't eat them year-round.

Growing up, I first knew the fruit as an "alligator pear".  Our next door neighbor had a tree and that was what she called them. That name is no longer in fashion, but the popularity of the avocado has increased by leaps and bounds since then.

There are many ways to partake of this food.  Avocado Toast has, without saying, become ubiquitous in many circles.  Guacamole is another, and it actually has its own day, as well.

Avocados make just about anything better, so I add them to sandwiches and salads.

But, I have never tried them in a smoothie nor as a dessert.  You?

National Cheesecake Day is celebrated on July 30 in The United States of America; and, so it seems, some other countries as well.

Bastille Day 2020 - le quatorze juillet

liberté, égalité, fraternité

This day marks the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, a fortress in Paris that was infamous for holding political prisoners, at the start of the French Revolution in 1789.

This year's observance in France will be very subdued, due to the pandemic. Things will be quiet as well in the USA. We have never made as big a deal out of Bastille Day as we do Cinco de Mayo - which interestingly enough is another date that commemorates a foreign event involving the French.  But, usually there is plenty of wine, and French food to found somewhere.

Things being what they are this year I will probably just go to a drive-thru and get some fries. I will watch Casablanca.  That is a personal tradition that I have long held.  The scene where "La Marseillaise", the French national anthem, is sung in a 'duel of anthems' with the Nazis is one of the most moving in any film that I have ever seen. I can not imagine ever growing tired of seeing it.

Joyeux quatorze juillet!

Privacy Policy, with Photos

Privacy Policy

It was brought to my attention that the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) may actually apply to this humble little blog. I am not so sure of that, but why take chances? Therefore, in order to avoid creating my own policy I just going to borrow the following from XKCD:

GDPR

I don't think that anybody does it better.

It would be hard to justify the title "Pictures and Words, a Blog" without some pictures. So, here is a random selection of photographs that I have recently taken:

National Buttermilk Biscuit Day is observed each year in the United States on May 14. Which led to this post on Facebook:

National Apple Pie Day was May 13 -

Finally, I have decided that I need to do more beard maintenance. This led to a spate of new products.

Dessert and Sex

Most men my age probably do not follow posts on BuzzFeed as much as I do. We are not their target demographic. My excuse is that my granddaughter works for them as a Social Media Strategist. And, it can be greatly amusing.

Dessert Test Will Determine How Sexy You Are

Last night I took a quiz that is supposed to determine one's sex appeal based on their choice of a cake, cookie, candy, and pie.

I can say that never before have been likened to a molten lava cake. It seems my choice of desserts outstrips my actual life, by far. Why not try it and see how you do.

By the way, as to my age, let's just say that I am no longer a sexagenarian. (See what I did there.)
