National Scotch Day

 But, not for me

I am told that National Scotch Day is observed every year on July 27 as a celebration dedicated to one of the world’s most iconic and respected spirits—Scotch whisky. I could not find a source as to why this day was chosen and find it particularly strange as I thought there is a rule - clear liquors in the summer, brown liquors in the winter.

Truth be told, I don't even like Scotch. That is why I do not have a photograph that actually works for this theme. However, I’m all about the perfect gin and tonic when the weather’s warm. And a nice bourbon when it isn’t.

Have a nice day, and whatever your beverage of choice  -  drink responsibly.

"More whiskey and fresh horses for my men!"

I can not find a definitive attribution for this quote, but I like the sentiment.

National Chicken Wing Day

July 29th is National Chicken Wing Day

Another Monday post. Another "National Day".  I would like to point out that I only resort to these days if I have an appropriate photo in my oeuvre, or can readily create one. Today might be a bit of a stretch as some sources imply that this day actually celebrates "Buffalo wings". But, I prefer the kind pictured above; which  are reminiscent of my mother's southern fried chicken. Back then, she only cooked whole chickens; wings were not a thing. But, nowadays, it seems that wherever in the world you are, chicken wings of some sort are on the menu.

For many years, my go to place for chicken wings was the very same Pioneer Chicken stand that Warren Zevon wrote about in his song – Carmelita.  However, as Pioneer began closing its locations and Popeyes became more prevalent in Southern California, I switched loyalties.

I read that an average American eats 90 chicken wings per year. For me, it is about a dozen at most. And, today I plan to work toward this year's quota.

Two Treats and a Flask of Bourbon

The Call of the Mountains

I used to write a blog titled "Rambles with Holly". It, among other things, was about the walking and hiking that I did with my dog, Holly.  My original plan was to call it "Travels with Holly" as an homage to Steinbeck, but that name was already taken at the time. As it turns out, we did a lot more walking locally than traveling, so it was probably for the best. The blog went on hiatus in 2014 after Holly crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.

However, a cartoon I came across the other day brought back memories of the good times that she and I had together.

I am taking the liberty of publishing it here.

The bourbon was mine

Plenty of water and treats, for both of us, were a regular thing. I seldom packed this flask, but I kept it handy in case the occasion should ever arise.

I like to think that I kept my bar adequately stocked as well.

Fair weather or foul, Holly was in her element when she was on the trail. A life outdoors is a life well lived.
